The term NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and was coined in the early seventies by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Grinder was a linguist and Bandler a Gestalt therapist. In a nutshell, they studied many therapists in varying fields to uncover what tools were most successful. In doing so they developed a strategy to identify excellence and devised ways for others to use these patterns of excellence to achieve similar results.

Richard Bandler and John Grindler studied with people such as;
• Fritz Perls, a psychotherapist and originator of the Gestalt school of therapy,
• Virginia Satir, a well-known family therapist
• Milton Erickson, a world-famous hypnotherapist

From this research, Grindler and Bandler developed NLP in the 1970s . Today NLP is seen as the art and science of personal excellence. It is becoming widely accepted that all coaches should acquire a strong understanding of the basics of NLP if they want to affect longstanding change with their clients.

Coaching itself stems from many different fields such as sports coaching, psychology, consulting, business management, and many others. Perhaps of most significance and known as the father of coaching is Sir John Whitmore, where he used a book by Timothy Gallway called “The Inner Game of Tennis” to link the psychology of sports coaching to business management, to help managers better manage their teams. His most popular model is the GROW Model (Goal, Reality, Options, Way forward). By joining the strategies of NLP with that of Sir John Whitmore, coaching is becoming one of the fastest growing industries in the world.

Neuro refers to the brain & how we see, hear and feel the world through our senses

Linguistics refers to the language we use to associate meaning to things eg, the pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells and words we use to remember a particular experience. That is, the language we use to talk to ourselves and others.

Programming refers to the habits, patterns, and strategies we use as we go about our day eg. do you follow a particular pattern as you get ready for work? What routines do you have without even thinking about them?

In a nutshell, NLP is understanding how we think and how this thinking influences our behaviours, and of course the outcomes we achieve.

Did you know we have 60,000 thoughts a day? In fact you probably had the same 60,000 thoughts the day before and the day before that. By understanding the patterns in our own thinking we can look at perhaps changing one of those thoughts which leaves us open to getting the different results we desire.
Did you also know that 90% of our behaviours are driven by our subconscious thoughts and only 10% by our conscious ones. This is why, you can read a book on healthy living, but not change your behaviours about it. With NLP, we work on shifting the subconscious patterns which is why any change is long lasting .
