Stop Running Boring Meetings

Let’s be honest. Nothing kills energy faster than a boring meeting.
And here’s the irony: teachers — the professional engagement officers of disengaged youth — sit through disengaging meetings every week.

We’d never get away with running a dull lesson. “The curriculum is crowded” has never been an excuse for boring teaching. So why do we accept “the agenda is crowded” as a reason to run lifeless meetings?

This matters. Because meetings are more than calendar fillers — they’re culture shapers. They either drain people or give them purpose.

Here’s where the science comes in: Self-Determination Theory tells us people thrive when they feel:
☑️ Competent – what am I learning?
☑️ Connected – what can we share?
☑️ Autonomous  what choices do I have?

Most staff meetings? They miss the mark. Instead of building competence, connection, and autonomy, they leave people depleted.

That’s why I created the Wellbeing Booster Program — a 10-minute-a-month circuit breaker designed for staff meetings. It’s about:

  • Shifting the narrative,

  • Creating space to reflect, and

  • Setting positive intentions for how we show up at work.

Because wellbeing at work isn’t just about surviving the crowded curriculum or endless agenda.

It’s about carving out small, intentional moments to reset — so that our conversations, culture, and classrooms are full of life.

So next time you’re in charge of a meeting, remember:

If we expect engaging lessons, we should demand engaging meetings.
